English

At St Benedict’s, English is at the heart of our curriculum. Our intent is to equip all children with the essential skills of communication, comprehension, and creativity. We aim to develop confident readers, writers and speakers who can express themselves fluently, purposefully and with an awareness of audience.
We aim to:
-
Equip children with the grammatical and structural knowledge to write effectively
-
Foster a love of reading and exposure to a diverse range of high-quality literature
-
Provide a consistent and inclusive writing process that develops independence and creativity
-
Ensure children understand the purpose of their writing and the impact it has on the reader
Our writing curriculum is underpinned by the belief that grammar, structure and vocabulary must be explicitly taught and then embedded through purposeful, high-quality writing opportunities.
Reading is taught daily and is central to every English unit. Our approach is shaped by research-informed principles that ensure children not only learn to read, but also read to learn.
